Description

Grades K-12
Children and youth deal with bullying – almost daily, according to recent statistics, with some studies showing that bullying behaviors begin as early in a child’s development as pre-Kindergarten. The objects of these behaviors targets often suffer social and emotional challenges as a result of being bullied and/or victimized. However, some studies also show that targets are developmentally atypical in their social development reporting lower levels of social connectedness/competence and tend to be rated lower in social status. In order to address and prevent bullying, understanding the psychological profile of the target can play an important role in bullying prevention efforts.
n this 90-minute primer on bullying, Charles A. Williams III, Ph.D, aka “Dr. Chuck” national speaker, leading expert in child & adolescent psychotherapy and an educational psychologist who has joint faculty appointments at the university level will lead participants through a review of current literature and the latest research on bullying. He will also examine recent case studies (some pulled from news headlines), where the role of the victimized student will be highlighted. The psychological and emotional “profiles” of school-aged youth who are the targets will be discussed.
Participants will be able to respond to questions posed (as well as pose questions themselves) while receiving answers in real-time. Questions attendees will be able to answer:

What makes a child a target?
What role does the parent play?
What role does the teacher play?
What is the role of bystanders?
Why are bystanders important for the target?
Are targets typically popular or unpopular with their school-aged peers?
How do adults (caregivers/school staff) interpret the behavior of the target?
How do you prevent a child from becoming a target?
How do you engage a target?
How do you make your child-serving environment bully-proof?
